Designing the modern home is an exciting project. Minimalism is more of an ideology than a specific design style. The philosophy is that "less is more" and that a home's form should support its function. With the number of available options from furnishings to finishes, the process of setting up the minimalist home embraces neutral colors, functional furnitures, clean lines and natural lightening.
If you decide to work with a well seasoned interior designer, this becomes a lot easier. However, if you decide to DIY your version of modern minimalism, there are somethings to take into consideration. You'll have to consider not only the size of the space you're working with, but also the available resources you can work with.
We have put together a simple 5-step guide that can help the process of setting up your space with the feel of modern minimalism.
1. DECLUTTER DECLUTTER!
“Everything in your home should serve a purpose, either emotionally, aesthetically, or functionally.” Minimalism is about living with less, if there are furnitures you haven't used in a year, its time to let it go. You can sell them on Instagram with decluttering experts.

2. Repurpose what you already own
After decluttering, try to reuse and repurpose what’s already in your home. “I am a big fan of repurposing decor that the client might already have so we often don’t need to buy anything new,” Joan says.
A great example is shoe boxes, Using clear shoe boxes as an organizer for clothes in your wardrobe, they are stackable and can be used as storage in areas like the bathroom, kitchen & closets.

3. Be Intentional on your furniture purchases
Having decluttered and repurposed some items in your space, its sometimes necessary to include a few new decor and/or fitting into your home. Buy only what would serve some functionality in your space.
For example, storage ottomans are a great option to consider because of its multiple purpose of usage as a table, a leg stool, a chair and the plus for storage space as well.

4. Timeless pieces
“One of the benefits to a minimalist design is that it enables you to invest in fewer, better things,” Joan says. Opt for timeless well-made pieces that will stand the test of time. Clean lines and well-constructed pieces never go out of style.

5. Keep the flow consistent
Opt for neutral paint through out the home to maintain cohesion. Pick two materials or color to use consistently while keeping functionality and consistency in mind.
Keep it airy and neutral.

Minimalism isn't a one size fits all, focus on what woks for you instead of trying to fit to a specific look. Work your way through your home one room at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed.
